I enjoyed the characters in Scarlet Nexus as well. It wasn't intending to be super deep hard sci fi or anything but it was fun. I thought the plot was weird in a good way. Scarlet Nexus - I actually liked the story in Scarlet Nexus. It made me have to take breaks during some of the longer fights. Also, holy crap did the devs for Tales of Arise love their shaky cam. They have their DPS phase then the phase where you dodge attacks/AOEs then rinse and repeat until they're dead with a boss gimmick or two interrupting that exact flow of combat. Tales of Arise boss fights sort of just felt like MMO bosses. I do think that it is easier to design those fights when you only have to deal with designing them around a single playable character though.
The abilities were really used creatively in some of the boss fights. Outside of boss fights, I found almost no challenge in the combat which was a bit disappointing.īoss Fights - I thought Scarlet Nexus had the better bosses overall.
(I don't feel this is spoiler territory but if anyone takes issue with this I'll edit the post) Tales is a lot longer than Scarlet Nexus in my experience so this can make encounters more tedious. When you get to the area that was in the demo, you've probably seen about 90% of the enemy types in the game. However, it hits a lot harder in Tales of Arise. In Tales of Arise it boils down to using a boost ability at what are essentially scripted moments and proceeding with the fight like normal.Įnemy Variety - In both games the lack of enemy variety is an issue. It feels satisfying in the beginning and only improves from there.īoost vs SAS - I think the Boost system in Tales and the SAS system in Scarlet Nexus (I think think that is what is was called) are similar but the SAS system was used more creatively in boss fights in Scarlet Nexus. I think Tales of Arise has a better progression with the combat. Early on the combat doesn't feel that good (like it was in the demo) but it feels a lot better later. Prioritizing the wrong abilities early on can lead to some of the combat feeling clunky. Both games have their issues though.įor reference, I played both games on hard for my first playthrough.īase Combat - I found with Scarlet Nexus that the upgrades you choose for combat can make or break the system for you. I'd rate them about equally with maybe a slight edge towards Towards Tales of Arise.
